Big picture - Why invest in Haydale Graphene Industries PLC

Haydale Graphene Industries PLC Snapshot

Haydale has developed a proprietary scalable plasma process to functionalise graphene and other nano materials. Functionalisation is an essential component in the commercialisation of graphene.

Haydale plans to commercialise its functionalisation process by providing value added solutions to both raw material producers and industrial corporations.

Haydale aims to work with both raw material producers and applications companies. Haydale is not a producer of the raw material nor an end user. The Company offers the producer the ability to enhance the value of its base product by effectively functionalising the material. The Company can assist the applications market by providing a service in sourcing the most appropriate material (suitably functionalised) to meet the target specification.

Haydale aims to become a preferred solutions provider in the provision of graphene type carbons and other nanostructures that can be dispersed in a target material and provide predetermined material properties to meet client specifications. Haydale has focused on adding value through functionalisation and sourcing the most appropriate nanoparticles including graphene to improve performance.

The Haydale process opens up new possibilities for realising the full benefits of nanomaterials and especially graphene which need to be optimised for incorporation into the intermediate material or end use.  When you get it right the results can be spectacular. See our Technology pages for examples of results achieved recently in reinforcing carbon fibre composites and epoxy composites.

Haydale will work with you to develop a solution to your challenge. If you are a graphene or other carbon nanomaterial producer we can look to improve your offering and move the material up the value chain. For those looking at end product enhancement or new product development project, our offerings are:

  • Supply of enhanced nanomaterials
  • Materials development
  • Collaborative research partnerships
  • Licensing of the HDPlas® process for volume applications

SOLUTIONS

HAYDALE IS A GLOBAL LEADER IN FACILITATING THE COMMERCIAL APPLICATION OF GRAPHENES. AS AN ENABLING TECHNOLOGY, HAYDALE BY WORKING WITH BOTH RAW MATERIAL SUPPLIERS AND PRODUCT MANUFACTURERS CAN PROVIDE A RAPID AND HIGHLY COST EFFICIENT METHOD OF SUPPLYING TAILORED SOLUTIONS TO ENHANCE AN APPLICATION.

The Haydale plasma functionalisation process is capable of being tailored to produce a wide range of surface modifications, including chemical groups suitable for bonding or repelling specific chemicals. It is an enabling technology where working with a raw material producer can add value to the base product and tailor the outputs to meet the target applications of the end user.

GRAPHENE AND COMPOSITES ARE NATURAL ALLIES

Composites have always utilised the specific properties of individual component parts that when mixed together produce a material with combined benefits. Traditionally those constituent parts have been a reinforcement, such as glass or carbon fibre, and a thermoset or thermoplastic matrix.

The recent discovery of Graphene and its long list of properties however provides a third major constituent material whose properties can be imparted into the composite.

The addition of functionalised Graphene within resin and composite materials can provide a wide range of benefits including:

  • Electrical conductivity
  • Thermal conductivity and heat management
  • Structural properties (toughness, strength, modulus, interlaminar, CAI)
  • Permeation resistance
  • Sensing ability

HAYDALE composite solutions (HCS) is a distinct unit within the HAYDALE group that specialises in the commercial development of resin, adhesives and composite materials with nano-improved performance. Based in Loughborough, HCS work with OEM suppliers, fibre and resin manufacturers and end users from all industrial arenas to manufacture compatible nanomaterial solutions for their product.

THE APPLICATIONS FOR GRAPHENE-BASED INK AND COATINGS INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

  • Barrier coatings
  • Electrically conductive inks for printed circuits and flexible electronics, antennas, or sensors and biosensors for medical applications
  • Thermal coatings and greases for heat dissipation
  • Coatings for EMI shielding or electrostatic discharge

The agreement with the Welsh Centre for Printing and Coating (WCPC) signed in July 2014 has enabled us to deliver a high quality and consistent commercially available graphene-based ink. Together, we aim to investigate further opportunities to exploit functionalised graphenes and other nanomaterials.

Inks and coatings have huge potential as they are ubiquitous and can be readily enhanced by low levels of particulate additions – for example, a patent application has been recently made on a high surface area (intelligent) pressure sensor that uses graphene based ink. It can be shaped and is thinner than a normal credit card. The novel multiple sensor points can be large area thereby adding substantial additional functionality for a diverse range of market opportunities from security flooring, leak detection in industrial gas and water pipes, to assessment of gait in injured sports people.

OUR TECHNOLOGY

At Haydale, we have a patented low temperature plasma (under 100 °C) process that enables the commercial exploitation of performance enhancing nanomaterials such as graphene to be realised through the bespoke functionalisation of materials. Importantly, Haydale is able to supply the most appropriate feedstock be it organic mined powders or other synthetically produced nanomaterials to meet the customer requirements. Our process has been independently verified by the National Physical Laboratory.

2D MATERIALS

EVERYONE THINKS OF GRAPHENE AS BEING THE ONLY TWO DIMENSIONAL MATERIAL. HOWEVER, THIS ISN’T THE CASE. THERE ARE LOTS OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF TWO DIMENSIONAL MATERIALS SIMILAR TO GRAPHENE, IT IS JUST THAT GRAPHENE IS THE ONE EVERYONE HAS HEARD OF.

These other members of the ‘2D family’ include the likes of Graphene Oxide, Molybdenum disulphide and Boron Nitride – to name but a few!   And just as with graphene, these materials can have one layer, few layers, multi layers and nanoplatelets. They can also be used to create 3D materials, such as nanotubes which can be single and multi-walled and can be mixed to create a hybrid.   At Haydale we don’t just work with graphene. These other nanomaterials are alternatives to graphene, which we can also access and functionalise and mix into materials. And by functionalising, just with graphene, we can use these 2D materials to increase properties such as conductivity and resistance, to suit the need of the product.

HDPLAS® PROCESS

SOURCING THE CORRECT MATERIAL FOR YOUR SPECIFIC APPLICATION OR PRODUCT IS CHARACTERISED BY COMPLEXITY.

BENEFITS OF THE HDPLAS® PROCESS

Our enabling technology provides a rapid and highly cost efficient method of supplying tailored solutions to both raw material suppliers and product manufacturers. Key advantages of the process include:

  • Surface engineering: Functionalisation via plasma gives the ability to add desired chemical groups, providing greater dispersion and compatibility between different matrices and nanomaterials resulting in enhanced product properties.
  • De-agglomeration: The intrinsically small nature of GNPs and CNTs cause them to agglomerate easily. Functionalisation via plasma uniquely encourages disentanglement and exfoliation of the nanostructure.
  • Can remove impurities from the host material.
  • No acid treatment: The process does not utilise chemical acid treatments which often causes damage during the functionalisation process, which can degrade functional performance, structural integrity and mechanical strength of the final product.
  • A multitude of target markets, such as inks and coatings, polymers and composites, energy, electronics, transport and an endless list of consumer product markets, each require different material specifications, performance and cost targets for specific applications
  • Many types of ‘graphene’, each defined by a different set of properties depending on its form; average flake size, number of layers and the chemical groups existing on the flake surface
  • Available production techniques with each method delivering a different material, cost structure and scalability

Given the associated complexity, sourcing the correct material is a big challenge for product and application manufacturers. ‘One size fits all’ solutions do not deliver over the materials already in use, with factors including impure materials, the wrong surface chemistry and the level of functionalisation required for specific applications often to blame.

The solution? To source the right material with the right level of functionalisation for the specific application or product, together with a scalable, low energy and dry functionalisation process.
